A generous crescent-shaped shawl, knit from the top/back neck down to the hem using 2 colors of fingering weight yarn. The shawl is shaped with increases on the ends of every row. The shawl features bands of simple stockinette interspersed with bands of stacked eyelets, and is finished off with a lace picot edging.

You will need approximately 415-425 yards EACH of two contrasting colors. If choosing to substitute yarns, be sure to select a fingering (sockweight) yarn that has a nice drape and blocks well.

The alder tree is a member of the birch family. It is a magical tree associated with Bran, the King of the Celts, and it’s magical properties lie in the fact that it spans both earth and water (since it is often found growing at the edges of streams and creeks). The trees are known for their spring catkins, which form drooping tassels, dropping into the water and carried downstream to regenerate. A very useful tree, it’s water resistant wood was used to build stilts and supports for structures at the water’s edge, and it’s bark is the main component in Almine Red dye.
