You need to know how to make an adjustable loop to begin this hat, as well as single crochet, and front post/back post single crochet (but only one row of it). I have a couple of links to outside sites which do a great job of describing:

This hat used 65 yards of the darker yarn and 93 yards of the lighter yarn.
