This sweet little hat starts with a roll brim, using a smaller size needle, and then switches to a larger needle to make the colorwork feathers. The brown version uses Brooklyn Tweed Arbor (DK weight) as the feather outline, and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool (sport weight) for the inside of the feathers. This makes a hat 20 inches in circumference and between 8.5 and 9 inches tall--a size that will fit MOST heads. It can be made slightly bigger by using a heavier yarn throughout, and increasing needle size.

The gray version uses Abundant Earth Fiber Sacred Ground (sport weight) as the outline, and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool as the inside color. It knits up to almost the exact same size.

I LOVE the way Spincycle yarns show off in these feathers, but it would be just as beautiful in your own handspun, or in gradient colors (think faded feathers), or using bits and pieces of your stash. It’s a great opportunity to play with color and keep your head warm! And it knits up very quickly, making it perfect for gifts, too!
