February Morning
This cabled hat may look impressive, but there is nothing here more challenging than a 3/3 cable. The pattern is written, but cables are charted. All stitches are clearly explained in the abbreviations section.
One skein of tosh DK will be enough to make all sizes except, possibly the very largest adult size. (And even then, it’ll be close.) I made 3 hats that were the medium adult size and had almost 20g left over each time.
Materials Needed:
75 - 240 yds heavy DK or worsted- weight yarn • Sample shown was made from Tosh DK yarn in the “Silver Leaf” colorway • 100% Merino, 225 yds per 100g skein • Although the manufacturer now categorizes this yarn as DK-weight, it is VERY close to the worsted range. I recommend that any substitution yarns contain between 205 - 240 yards per 100g skein.
US Size 5 / 3.75mm circular needle
US Size 4 / 3.5mm circular needle (optional, for a nicer transition between brim and body)
US Size 3 / 3mm circular needle
Set of US Size 5 dpns (to use for decs, or use circ needle and magic loop technique)
1 traveling stitch marker
cable needle
yarn needle
Techniques Used:
Working in the Round
Reading a Chart
1/1 and 3/3 cables
Increases (Make 1, and Make 1 Purl)
Decreases (K2tog; SSK; Sl1, K1, psso; Sl1, K2tog, psso)
I have many test knitters to thank for helping me put the finishing touches on this pattern. Thank you for all the valuable feedback Niveknits, kimmyz, bensgirl102397, BR7394, sandyvar, SpiritedMamaMakes, corbae, LTimms, LaurenKristine, kisstherain1989.
One major thing that the test knitters showed me was that most dk yarns are not great substitutes for tosh dk, which is why many of their test knit projects came out smaller than expected. At 225 yds/100g it is a much closer match to worsted-weight Cascade 220 (220yds/100g) than it is to most dk-weight yarns. There is a note on the pattern itself recommending appropriate substitutions for tosh dk, although I can also highly recommend using this lovely yarn if you want a soft hat in a gorgeous color with nice, defined cables!
