Feed the Birds
Feed the Birds is a stretchy loop cowl with travelling cables. It is knit in the round in two sizes -- neckwarmer, and long loop. The neckwarmer size comes in regular or tall. The long loop can be worn long or doubled around to keep out the chill air. Using only one 50g of sport weight, the neckwarmer is perfect for that special yarn, or for stash busting, and the taller neckwarmer using approximately double that or 100g. The long loop also uses 100g, or 330 yds sportweight.
Pattern intstructions are written for the neckwarmer first, followed by the long loop in parentheses. Tall neckwarmer variation will be in a side note.
Notes on Traveling Cables. If this is your first time, they will seem odd. Just keep in mind that all of the stitches held to the back on the cable needles are purl stitches, and all the stitches held to the front are knit stitches. It will begin to make sense when you are doing them.
Although this pattern is written for sport yarn, almost any yarn can be used. The neckwarmer or loop will look great knitted in heavier yarn on larger needles, or lighter yarns, using lighter needles. The finished size can be customized by changing the number of cast on stitches in increments of 18.
Finished Sizes:
Neck warmer: 5” x 19”
Tall Neckwarmer: 8” x 19”
Long Loop: 6” x 47”
Yarn: 50g sport weight. Solid colors shows cables the best, as does something with a crisp hand. Tall and Long Loop require 100g.
Gauge: 5st/inch in ribbing, not stretched.
Needles: Size US6/4.0mm 20” circ, or whatever gives you a nice soft drape and approximate gauge.
