The sample shawl used all but a few yards of the listed yarn. If your gauge is different, or if you just don’t want to engage in a thrilling game of yarn chicken, there are modification instructions included in the pattern!


  • This shawl could easily be worked in thicker or thinner yarn if desired. Be aware that if you use thicker yarn, your shawl will be larger. Conversely, it will be smaller if you use thinner yarn. This also applies to the cable and lace border. It will be narrower in thinner yarn and wider in thicker yarn.
  • If you choose to substitute yarn thickness, make sure you use an appropriate needle size. I’d recommend a US 6 (4.0mm) for fingering weight yarn, a US 10 (6.0mm) for worsted weight, and a US 11 (8.0mm) for bulky weight yarn.
  • If you choose to substitute yarn thickness, you may need more or less yarn than the pattern calls for
