Felted Cloche and Flower
This hat pattern includes instructions for knitting and felting this adorable Downton-style cloche and flower. This hat is a versatile hat and can be worn with both dressy and casual attire. It is great for traveling because it’s pack-able and springs back into shape when you put it on. You can wear the brim down or turned up. You can adorn the hat with a flower or ribbons. And best of all, it keeps you snuggly and cuddly warm. Felted hats are rain and water repellent. A pattern and illustrations are included for felting the flower. This pattern also includes information on felting hats and recommendations for yarns.
Materials:
U. S. Size 11 24-inch circular needles and dpns
1 stitch marker
For 100% wool worsted weight – a total of approximately 440 yards worsted weight
Purchase yarn that is felt-able. Do not use super wash or washable wool.
If you want to make the hat with the flower and the band, you will need
Color A for trim, band and flower – 150 yards
Color B for other parts of hat – 290 yards
For flower you need approximately 25 yards of worsted weight yarn
I suggest you purchase extra yarn.
Optional – Hat Shaper from Hatshapers.com or other form to shape your hat. I like the Medium Plus Plus and the Large Classic Dome for most of my hats.
Measurements: The hat is knitted in one size fits many teens/adults. The drying form that you use will determine the finished size of your hat.
Gauge: Purchase a yarn that shows on the wrapper gauge of approximately 20 stitches and 26 rows to a 4 inch by 4 inch gauge when knitted with U.S. Size 7 needles. Your unfelted gauge with double strand on U.S. Size 11 should approximate 12-14 stitches to 4 inches. Since the hat will be felted to size, an approximation will work.
