This is an easy-to-make hat suitable for both beginners and more experienced machine knitters. Knowledge of tuck and stockinette stitch are the only requirements. As you can see by the picture I enjoy making these hats and they are great sellers at craft shows. Be sure to use 100% wool yarn, if it has even a small percentage of man-made fibres it will not felt well. Basic felting information is included in the instructions.

A couple of people have asked me what it means in my felted hat pattern when I say “Take off on waste yarn, then double up the stitches”.

Here’s what it means: It is a way of reducing the number of stitches you’re knitting by half, much the same as in hand knitting where you are told to “knit 2 together across the row”. After you take off the work with waste yarn, you are putting it back on again but only on half the number of needles (2 stitches to a needle) You’ll pick up the stitches that are the same colour as the hat, which are just below the waste yarn stitches. Hope this helps, if not pm me.

P.S. The last “reduction” after you’ve knit the 3 rows and you only have 23 stitches left on the machine, rather than taking off on WY & doubling up, I just use the transfer tool to move stitches across to the one beside it and moving the pairs in to close the space. It’s up to you whether you want to do this, but to me it’s quicker. Then you’ll knit 1 row across and take the stitches off with yarn as per the pattern.
