This project requires around an hour of knitting, half an hour of felting and half an hour of assembly time. Knitting the stars is simple, but interesting -- using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s basic star pattern from “Christmas Fiddle-Faddle in the Wilds” (Knitter’s Almanac, p. 86) with slight variations. The star is stuffed with a small amount of wool roving and the wand is a wooden dowel covered with an I-cord of felted wool. The ribbons are very securely attached with both fabric glue and thread.

Materials Needed:
1 wooden dowel, approx. 13” long and 5 mm in diameter (don’t go thinner, but thicker is fine)
2 small amounts (10-12 grams) of 100% wool, worsted weight yarn in two complementary colors (this is a great way to use up extra bits; striping or color-changing are fun options.)
2 ribbons, approx. 18” long
Yarn needle
Fabric glue
Needle and thread
Stuffing - I prefer wool roving, but polyester is fine

Gauge
Don’t bother taking a gauge - just remember to knit loosely for felting.

Felting
This a small project, so I recommend hand felting in your sink.
