These mittens are knitted in a loose gauge and felted/fulled to make the mittens denser and warmer. The mittens can be made to fit a large range of sizes because you can felt the mittens to any size you like. These mittens are a very good project to do if you have never felted before. This was the first project that I ever felted, and I was extremely nervous. I worried that the mittens would not felt right, that they would be too big or too small. I tried first to felt them in the washing machine, but they did not felt in even the hottest water because the washer did not agitate enough. I tried again by hand, and it worked beautifully. The next day, I made another pair in a smaller size, and with a lot more confidence!
This time, I skipped the two hours at the washer that I went through last time, and the whole thing went smoothly.

The mittens can be made to fit a large variety of sizes because they are made huge to begin with. They can be felted to the size you want, but remember that they are warmer the more you felt them, and they only be felted so much. After a while, they will refuse to felt any more, so just be aware of this.

The gauge does not matter too much, but it just needs to be fairly loose so that the stitches have space to move around and felt.

You will need a washtub, rubber gloves, and a bit of mild dish soap or olive oil. These are for felting

You will also need some scrap yarn, and a yarn needle in addition to the yarn and knitting needles.

You will need 1 skein each of two colors. The total yardage is 220 yards. You can make the mittens in one color if you like.
