fenced in
A cozy toque/beanie with chain link fence cables. Knit in the round from the brim up. Pattern given in 3 sizes for bulky weight yarn.
Go outside and stay warm.
warning: many people have found this hat small so when in doubt, go for the larger/longer size!
tip #1: If you are a tight knitter and/or cabling with a cable needle, you probably cable tighter than me. If so, I recommend going up one needle size from the needle that gives you gauge in stockinette for the charted section or making size L.
tip #2: If you can cable without a cable needle, this hat will knit up much quicker. Please check my ravelry project for notes on how I did this.
tip #3: If you want a longer hat to cover your ears, add 2 or 3 rows to the ribbing. If you want to add length but are beyond the ribbing, add an extra half fenced in chart repeat as follows: for XS or SM, knit through chart row 9 then follow L top decreases; for L, do 2 full fenced in chart repeats plus another 2 rows then follow SM top decreases.
The pattern was updated on 9/12/2010 to fix the ssk abbreviation errata. The latest pdf is named fencedin_hat_sep2010.pdf and numbered version 1.2.
