Fenwick takes inspiration from shell artist Linda Fenwick and specifically two murals that she created to decorate a pair of garden pavilions in the grounds of Newby Hall in North Yorkshire. Linda Fenwick uses shells that she has foraged or that are waste products from the food industry to create beautiful pieces of art.

The Fenwick shawl explores and celebrate the textures and shapes of shells, worked at a loose gauge to create a draped accessory perfect for warmer months.

CONSTRUCTION
Fenwick is worked flat, from the top centre of the shawl outwards with increases used to create a crescent-shaped shawl. Picked up stitches, yarn overs and dropped stitches are used to form a range of textures throughout the design. Short row shaping is used at intervals at each end of the shawl to elongate the wingspan without adding depth. Short rows are also used to form the patterns of semi-circles that run across the middle and bottom of the shawl.

SAMPLE
The wearer is 5’10” with a 37” chest circumference. The sample has been worked to pattern.

GAUGE
Gauge is checked by working R1-24 of the shawl pattern. After wet blocking, this section of the shawl should measure ~7” / 17.5cm in wingspan (i.e.: the length along the I-Cord at the top of the shawl) and ~2” / 5cm in depth down the centre of the shawl. Achieving exact gauge is not important for this accessory.

YARN
The sample has been worked using Miss La Motte Yarns’ Lustre fingering-weight base (50% Superwash Merino / 15% Kid Mohair / 15% Mulberry Silk / 20% Polyamide; 400m / 438yds per 100g) using colourways Birthday Cake as the main colour and Cosmic Latte as the contrast colour.
