I created three versions of this pattern:

  1. A version with a non-solid background (resembling a waffle or mesh texture). This option requires less yarn than the solid pattern. Additionally, it has no gaps on the wrong side, which some people prefer.

  2. A solid version.

  3. A solid, multicolor version. Here, I give you room for creativity in highlighting the butterflies and the central element with color.

For each version, there are written instructions and charts for two techniques: overlay mosaic and interlocking filet crochet.

In both the written instructions and charts, the main panel, first border, and second border are clearly marked. You have the option to crochet the main panel (or the main panel and first border, or the full width of the blanket) bottom-up and then add a border in the round (envelope border for overlay mosaic). This approach allows for different color combinations and creates a neat, even edge.

I also included written instructions and charts for crocheting in the round from the center. With the mosaic technique, you won’t need to cut the yarn after each row, and with interlocking crochet, you’ll work only on the front side.

Main Panel: 257 sts x 369 rows / 128 x 184 filet windows

Main Panel and 1st Border: 277 sts x 389 rows / 138 x 194 filet windows

Full Size (Main Panel, 1st and 2nd Borders): 301 sts x 413 rows / 150 x 206 filet windows

Yarn requirements for a full blanket (solid version) using yarn similar to Scheepjes Stone Washed (hook size 3.25–3.5 mm): approximately 4,020 m of C1 (design) yarn, and 4,420 m of C2 (background) yarn (4,396 yds and 4,833 yds). Full size approx. 150 x 206 cm (59 x 81 inches).

Yarn requirements for a full blanket (solid version) using yarn similar to Scheepjes Whirl, Whirlette (hook size 2.5 mm): approximately 2,680 m of C1 (design) yarn, and 2,950 m of C2 (background) yarn (2,931 yds and 3,226 yds). Full size approx. 116 x 159 cm (45¾ x 62½ inches).

I don’t provide an explanation of color changes and yarn carrying for the multicolor overlay mosaic version. You can find many helpful videos on YouTube and choose the one you like best.

For the multicolor interlocking technique, I have a video tutorial for changing colors within a single row. If you’d like to make a blanket using this technique, I recommend practicing on a small project first, like this one on Ravelry
