A lovely small Christmas project suitable for beginners to mosaic overlay crochet as long as you know crochet basics. There are general instructions for mosaic overlay in the pattern. However, if you haven’t done mosaic crochet before, you will find a number of videos on YouTube to help you.

The pattern contains written instructions and charts. One chart is the full pattern and there are two halves of the chart which are better for printing and pasting together.

Pattern is in US terminology. I used acrylic yarn however, if you are going to put hot objects on the placemat, cotton yarn would be more suitable.

The placemat in the pictures measures 45 x 28cm (17 ¾ x 11”) using Stylecraft Special DK and James C. Brett Crafter DK yarn.

When choosing yarn, it is important to choose contrasting colours so the pattern stands out. You need at least 2 colours and less than 50g for each colour. A great use of your stash! Of course, any yarn can be used for this pattern but the size will change depending on yarn and hook used and tension.
