Field of Flowers (S-2004)
A field of flowers is bordered by waves of old shale on this shetland style square lace shawl or throw. The center square is worked back and forth in rows of garter lace. The border is picked up and knit in rounds, then bound off with a simple lace edging. Designed for dk, fingering and lace weight yarns. Make in one color or use multiple shades.
Yarn and Needles Used:
DK weight throw or shawl: Shown in 8 ply New Zealand wool in natural shades. Size US 9, 29" (or longer) circular needles. Double pointed needles in the same size and a size I crochet hook.
Fingering/Lace weight shawl: Helen's Lace from Lorna's Laces, 1200 yds if worked on US 5 needles, 1500 yds if worked on a US 6 needles.
Size US 5 or 6, 24" (or longer) circular needles. Double pointed needles in the same size and a size F crochet hook.
Other Supplies: A spare 29” circular needle at least 2 sizes smaller; 4 st makers; 8 yards of smooth waste yarn in a constrasting color; tapestry needle; rustproof pins; blocking wires (optional).
Unblocked Gauge:
8 Ply: 3.5 sts = 1” in garter stitch on size 9 needles.
Fingering/Lace wt: 5 sts = 1” on size 5 needles or 4.5 sts = 1” on size 6 needles, in garter stitch.
