Filoli Shawl offers the familiar comfort of a cozy triangular wrap spiced up with interesting stitch patterns. It is named after a beautiful historic house and garden in the SF Bay Area and is a sister project to Filoli Cowl.
The shawl features two types of mosaic patterns and garter stitch. All colorwork requires working with just one color per row and the whole shawl is almost completely worked with knit and slipped stitches - very little purling, yay!
This asymmetric piece is knit flat from the tip and shaped with increases along one side. Due to this construction, the length of the shawl is easily adjustable to fit the available yardage - just knit until you run out of yarn.
The edges are polished with built-in i-cord that is continued in the two-color i-cord bind off, video tutorial provided. Colors are carried along the edge and hidden in the i-cord edging, so there’s no yarn cutting and just a couple of ends to weave in. Mosaic stitch patterns are both charted and written out.
Yarn
- Fingering weight yarn in two colors, 450 (900)yds / 410 (820)m or 1 (2) 100g skeins each
- Use all available yardage by working fewer / more pattern repeats
- Large sample yarn: Merino Super Sock by La Bien Aimee (75% sw merino, 25% nylon, 465yds / 425m, 3.5oz / 100g) in colors Blanc (off-white) and Aimee’s Shawl (light pink)
- Small sample yarn: Glitter Fingering Minis by Peninsula Yarn (75% superwash merino, 20% nylon, 5% gold stellina, 5 mini skeins, 87yds / 80m, 0.7oz / 20g each) in colors Fuchsia Ombré and Teal Ombré

- US 2 / 2.75mm straight or circular needles

- 23 sts and 47 rows in 4” / 10cm in garter stitch, blocked
- Swatch to determine the needle size that helps to fit the gauge
- Although gauge is not crucial for this pattern, note that differences in it will affect the stitch definition, drape, and size of the shawl

- Wingspan (the longest measurement from tip to tip) 49 (73)“ / 125 (185)cm
