Fimbul winter mittens
This an old pattern and I discovered 1 mistake:
the thumb stitches that are to be knit on a piece of scrap yarn is supposed to be placed on a piece of scrap yarn ( as in blurry photo).
This is a pattern for 4 mittens suitable for temperatures from -5C to -20C. They have all been tested by an active child at the temperatures suggested. Even when the mittens were partially wet from playing in the snow, he stayed warm.
The pattern is made for a child size 12/13 / woman’s size small. The pattern contains suggestions for altering the size.
You need 1 ball of each yarn for 1 pair of mittens. The thinnest Alpaca is enough for 2 pairs of mittens or used from both ends of the ball (Mitten 4).
The basis of all the mittens is Garnstudio’s Nepal ( a wool/alpaca mix). Additional yarns are different Alpaca yarns.
I would strongly recommend using the same yarns or similar yarns. It’s the yarn combination and the density of the knitting that keeps the mittens warm no matter how cold it gets.
Mitten 1 -5C is 1 stranded
Mitten 2 -8C is 2 stranded
Mitten 3 -10C is 2 stranded
Mitten 4 -20C is 4 stranded
