Fingal’s Cave is on Staffa, one of the most unusual islands in the Scottish Hebrides. Its famous hexagonal columns were formed by volcanic eruptions, cooled down rapidly by seawater.

The shawl is next in my series of colourful textured shawls and ideal for those who enjoy experimenting with colours and stitch patterns.

It is worked from the top down, starting with a simple all-over lace pattern, symbolizing flocks of sea birds, followed by a 2-colour slip stitch pattern forming prominent columns. The shawl is finished with a broad lace border. All three stitch patterns are separated by garter stitch rows.

The size of the shawl is 74” (188cm) wide and 31” (78cm) deep after blocking with fingering weight (4ply/sock) yarns in 2 contrasting colours, approx. 436 yds (400m) per colour.

Skein Queen Selkino, 70% merino, 30% silk, 436 yds (400m) per 100g skein, 1 skein col. Golden Yellow.

Schoppel Wolle Finest 4ply, 100% merino, 436 yds (400m) per 100g skein, 1 skein col. 2287 Meeresblick.

The lilac and dark purpl shawl is made with
Eden Cottage Titus 4ply, 75% merino, 25% silk, 436 yds (400m) per 100g skein, 1 skein col. Hibiscus.

Ripples Crafts Burras 4ply, 100% merino, 400 yds (366m) per 100g skein, 1 skein col. 6409 Assynt Peat.
