This shawl is not your usual two colour brioche! Let both colours enjoy space on the right side with this double brioche, cabled, syncopated design. If any of those words are unfamiliar, don’t be daunted! I have video tutorials for all the unusual stitches used.

As for the name, a finial is a decorative element marking the end of an object. Think of the little spire on top of a dome, or the carving at the end of a curtain rod or bed post, or even the fancy bit at the end of the handle of a souvenir spoon. The diamond motif of this shawl reminded me of those unnecessary but beautifully intricate details that bring joy in to our lives.

Materials:
• Fingering weight yarn in two colours, approximately 800m (875yds) of each.
• 3.75mm/US 5 circular needle with an 80cm/32” or longer cable.
• Two locking stitch markers or cable needles.
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Size of finished shawl:
Wingspan 150cm/60”, depth 75cm/30”, relaxed after blocking. Since the shawl is worked from the centre out, you can customise the size by working more or fewer repeats.

Gauge:
Obtaining gauge is not essential, as long as you are happy with the fabric you are getting. Different gauge will affect the size of the finished object and the amount of yarn used.
Each motif in the sample shawl measured 20cm/8” long by 14cm/5.5” wide, relaxed after blocking.
