Fire and Hemlock
For double-knitting, stranded colourwork, or filet crochet.
Inspired by the book “Fire and Hemlock” by my favourite author Diana Wynne Jones, I created this chart after hearing Diana Wynne Jones had died. The depth of sadness I felt on hearing this took me very much by surprise. I set out to design this chart there and then.
If you haven’t read her books, I envy you: You can go and read them for the first time, and I strongly advise you to do so. They are marvellous, each and every one of them, and I would not be the person I am today if I hadn’t come across those books at some point in my life.
I have not yet knitted this chart, I have been meaning to do it in colourwork (obviously….), maybe double knitting, with the hedge in front in black, the writing and sky behind the hedge in fire colours, yellows, oranges, reds, purples. (The actual picture described in the book has very different colours, though.) I even learnt spinning specifically to spin myself this yarn – and haven’t done it, yet, because I think dyeing a yarn in those colours would actually look better.
I was wondering if this wants to be a wall hanging or maybe become the front cover of a bag (possibly even felted).
If you want to try this chart, feel free. I would be very happy to see your results.
And don’t forget to read Diana Wynne Jone’s books
