DESCRIPTION

From hipster slouch to fisherman’s cap, this classic ribbed beanie is designed to be worn with the brim unfolded or rolled up as many times as you want for a versatile, cozy fit. Featuring all over 2x2 ribbing with subtle, nearly invisible decreasing for the crown, the Fireside beanie is a simple, beginner-friendly design that is straightforward and quick to knit up.

The pattern includes numbers for fingering weight and dk weight yarn, with 5 sizes from newborn through adult large.

Fingering weight:
SIZE 1: Newborn, 13.5”/34cm head circumference
SIZE 2: Baby/Toddler, 16”/40cm head circumference
SIZE 3: Child, 18.5”/46cm head circumference
SIZE 4: Adult S, 21”/52cm head circumference
SIZE 5: Adult L, 23.5”/59cm head circumference

DK weight:
SIZE 1: Newborn, 14”/35cm head circumference
SIZE 2: Toddler/Child, 17”/43cm head circumference
SIZE 3: Adult S, 20.5”/51cm head circumference
SIZE 4: Adult L, 23.5”/60cm head circumference

To choose your size, measure the circumference of your head from the base of your skull, around your ears, and across your forehead (this should be the widest point of your head). Pattern is written with approximately 1-2”/2.5-5cm of negative ease across the size range. For finished hat measurements, see full schematic.

In the pattern photos, the brown hat is fingering weight size 5 and the grey hat is dk weight size 5. Both hats are worn with 1”/2.5cm of negative ease.

 
 
GAUGE, NEEDLES, NOTIONS

Fingering weight:
Gauge: 26 sts and 34 rows over 4”/10cm in stockinette after blocking
Recommended needles: US4 (3.25mm) 16” (40cm) circular

DK weight:
Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10cm in stockinette after blocking
Recommended needles: US7 (4.5mm) 16” (40cm) circular

Additional supplies: DPNs or longer circular needle in same size as main needles (for preferred method of working smaller circumference in the round), stitch markers, darning needle, balloon (for blocking!)
 
 
YARN

The Fireside Beanie was designed in White Gum Wool, an ethical superfine Merino from the Tasmanian Midlands. This yarn is extremely soft and springy with a tight ply and beautiful stitch definition. Any wool or wool-blend yarn with good stitch definition and memory should work nicely for this pattern.
