My husband and I moved to northern British Columbia in the middle of winter, from the temperate pacific coast.

We broke temperature records that winter, reaching -44 C or -47 F! We went through a lot of firewood.

I was used to the rain forest and cedar trees of ‘down south’. Here was a beautiful boreal forest of pines, spruce and birch.

My husband dutifully split and carried in firewood to keep our family warm and cozy. Wood stoves, previously a romantic notion in my head, truly are a necessity.

The rich texture of the firewood inspired these cozy cabled socks. Which, it turns out, are perfect for fireside knitting and wearing!

These are constructed toe-up, with a gusset and heel flap. I’ve included both charted and written instructions, as well as a bobble tutorial. The pattern comes in 3 adult sizes.

Skills Required
Judy’s Magic Cast-on, working in the round, knit, purl, slipping stitches, increasing, decreasing, cable knitting, bind off using a stretchy method.

Materials
Suggested Yarn:
1 100g/3.5oz, 423m/463yds skein, Barnyard Knits Fingering, 75% superwash merino/25% nylon in colour Campfire.

Yardage: 250m/273yds (300m/328yds, 375m/410yds)

Suggested Needles:
2.5mm/US 1.5, 80cm/32” length for magic loop, OR 2 40cm/16” long for the two-circular method, OR 2.5mm/US 1.5 double pointed needles. Darning needle, cable needle if you like to use one.

Gauge: 34sts and 50 rounds/10cm or 4”, in the round, in stockinette stitch. Cable panel measures 3” across, unstretched.

Sizes:
Small = Ladies US size 4-6.5
Medium = Ladies US size 7-9/Mens US size 6-8
Large = Ladies US size 9.5-12/Mens US size 8.5-11

Notes:
-I’ve included both written and charted instructions for the cable pattern.
-I work these using magic loop, however, you can knit these socks in your preferred in the round method.
-Width is easily added on either side of the cable panel for the foot, and on either side of both cable panels for the leg.
-I’ve included instructions for the ‘cable set up round’ for every possibility. This will allow you to make the socks the right length for your foot, and easily be able to set up your leg cable round, regardless of where you left off for the heel flap.
-Don’t feel like working the cable on the back of the leg? Just work st st for that section instead.
