A sideways shawl designed with hand-dyed variegated sock yarn in mind – a mixture of stockinette, garter stitch and clean lace lines breaks up the colours and helps to minimise pooling.

The pretty pointed lace edging is worked at the same time as the main body of the shawl, and the sideways construction allows you to use up as much of your yarn as you like.

This would be a great pattern for beginner lace knitters to try - the lace pattern is straightforward and easy to follow, and the sideways construction means that there are no long/boring/difficult cast-ons or bind-offs!

• 4.5 mm/US size 7 needles (or size needed to obtain a good drape with chosen yarn; long circulars recommended)
• Blue shawl: 437 yds/(400 m) of 4-ply/fingering weight yarn (sample shown in Araucania Botany Lace, shade PT 1793 [100% wool, 448 yds/(410 m) per 100 g])
• Pink-multi shawl 370 yds/(338 m) of fingering weight yarn (sample shown in Araucania Ranco Multy, shade 336 [75% wool, 25% nylon, 376 yds/(344 m) per 100 g])
• 3 stitch markers
• Darning needle
• Pins/wires for blocking
