This is a convertible, versatile version of the Flippy Chevron Cowl!

Wear this long chevron cowl at least three different ways—as a long tube, as a sideways loop with the buttons fastened end-to-end, or as a doubled, shorter tube, with the cowl pulled inside itself and the buttons fastened to secure it that way. Even though it’s knit with fine yarns, the doubled fabric gives it a lot of structure that looks really nice.

This cowl still loosely matches the Flippy Chevron Hat, but this time, it finishes with ribbing and eyelet buttonholes. The ribbing is where this cowl gets its name, because for me, it looks sort of troutlike when combined with the big chevron shape.

Pair weird buttons with random scraps for a pretty nice effect!

The sample is made with all scraps, including self-striping Uneek Sock and marled Cascade Heritage Wave.

Materials

• 575-600 yards soft sock yarn; shown in scraps of Malabrigo Yarn Sock in Turner, Cascade Heritage Wave in Nightshade, and Urth Yarns Uneek Sock in colorway 55.
• 1 16-24” circular needle in US3-4/3.25-3.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
• Tapestry needle
• 4-6 removable stitch markers
• 12 buttons, sized to suit yarn/eyelets
• sewing needle and thread, if needed for buttons

Gauge:
Gauge is 20 sts and 41 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked in the round and blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
Flat, the buttons unfastened, this cowl measures about 30”/76cm long overall by 10”/25cm wide. It’s 28”/71cm long measured along the increase and decrease lines, from chevron point to end.
