Flag
According to Icelandic law, using the national flag is a privilege and not a right. The owner must follow instructions on its usage and make sure that his or her flag is in mint condition regarding colouring, wear and tear. It also states that no-one shall disrespect the flag in act or word, subject to a fine or imprisonment of up to one year.

Fortunately, you shouldn’t get into any sort of trouble knitting the British flag (body) and two French flags (arms) with Icelandic intarsia. Icelandic intarsia is the technique that was used to knit garter stitch inserts in Iceland. Worn with soft skin shoes, the inserts were decorated with geometric floral patterns. Interpreted in small squares and the natural colours of the sheep, the Flag cardi takes on a very modern look. With no seaming at all, it is very versatile: you can wear it mid-long or, upside down, short, opened or closed with a clever set of buttons. It looks just as good as a wrap or even a scarf!

The Flag jacket pays tribute to artist Birgir Andrésson and one of his works called “United we stand”. It is also a wink at the Icesave dispute.

Errata corrected: note that 2 yarn colors have been inverted in the material needed. Color RED (peach yarn) is 3 and color WHITE (white yarn) is 202, not the contrary.

Le Drapeau (Flag)
Selon la loi islandaise, utiliser le drapeau est un privilège et non un droit. Le propriétaire doit suivre les instructions sur son utilisation et s’assurer que son drapeau est en accord avec la réglementation sur la couleur, le port… La loi précise aussi que personne ne doit être irrespectueux envers le drapeau par ses actes ou ses mots. Cela est sujet à amende et à une peine de prison qui peut aller jusqu’à un an.

Heureusement, vous ne devriez pas avoir trop de démélés avec la Justice en tricotant le drapeau britannique (corps) et deux drapeaux français (bras) en jacquard islandais. Tricoté en un seul morceau, sans coutures du tout, le Drapeau est très versatile : vous pouvez le porter mi-long, court, dans un sens ou l´autre, ouvert, fermé, drapé, cela grâce à un jeu astucieux de petits boutons. Il peut même vous servir d´écharpe !

Le Drapeau rend hommage à l´artiste islandais Birgir Andrésson et à l´une de ses oeuvres, intitulée “Unis nous restons”. C´est également un clin d´œil au problème Icesave divisant en particulier la Grande-Bretagne et l’Islande.
