Flatland Lock
Knit or crochet.
A visualisation and logic puzzle.
It is a long time since I started this puzzle afghan. I intended to add a border of squares all round but it never happened and probably never will so I decided to offer it as a free pattern.
The pattern is not as detailed as the booklets we usually produce but it does give enough information for you to be able to make the afghan using any squares of your choice. It can be knit or crochet so you could use mitred squares, granny squares or anything else you fancy.
Mine was made in DK but you can use any yarn.
The design represents four sliding linkages which can only move up, down, left or right. The challenge is to free them all avoiding the four posts at the corners.
The pattern contains the solution to the problem.
We got this idea from Leonardo’s Mirror and Other Puzzles by Ivan Moscovich and it is inspired by Edwin A Abbott’s Flatland.
Read the story of this afghan on Ravelry or on Woolly Thoughts web site.
