An easy, summer top with short, dolman-style sleeves and a centre bodice detail featuring dropped stitches and optional fringe tassels. Worked in reverse stocking stitch in two pieces and seamed at the sides, the shoulders are shaped with short rows and joined with a three-needle bind-off (or grafted together).

To fit bust 76-86 cm (30-34”) : 92-102 cm (36-40”): 107-117 cm (42-46”) with 13 cm (5”) positive ease.

YARN
1120 metres (1225 yds) : 1509 metres (1650 yds) : 1830 metres (2002 yds) of ITO Kinu in ‘Angora’ colourway. Garment is knitted holding yarn doubled.
What gives this top its look is the fabric and drape of the nubby, silk yarn. To substitute yarn, use a textured cotton, linen or silk fibre (remember, lace-weights are held double). You can also use a single strand of fingering-weight yarn (which requires half the listed yardage).

GAUGE
10 cm (4”) = 20 stitches and 28 rows using 4 mm (US 6) needles and working in reverse stocking stitch (holding yarn doubled).

In 2009, my husband and I drove the Great Basin Highway through the US states of Utah and Nevada. I’d dreamt of making that trip for years. From my (then) home in London, I’d even prepared a playlist of classic 70’s music for the drive - Gold Dust Woman, Tequila Sunrise…

The journey fulfilled my romanticised vision of the American West - the vast arid landscapes; the endless strip of tarmac stretching into the horizon. It was truly a joy ride. This top is my tribute to that memorable trip.

Which brings me to fringes. They are a sartorial weakness of mine. I cannot resist them; and I’m not one for embellishments. They tantalize me with their free-spirited movement, conjuring images of open landscapes where wild things roam.

So here I present my new summer top design - knitted in slubby silk with short dolman-style sleeves, a deep scoop neckline and a relaxed fit. The centre of the bodice features twin columns of drop stitches, and if you fancy, fringe. Cowboy hat optional. ;)
