Flemish Brickwork
From ca. 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.10, this pattern was used for a baby’s under-vest. Weldon called this a “basket pattern” but due to so many patterns called “basket”, I named it after the brickwork it resembles.
There are 8 pattern rows of knit and purl stitches with a multiple of 10 stitches. Add border or selvage stitches, if preferred. This pattern can be converted to in-the-round by swapping knit for purl and vice versa in every other row.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
100 yards of Cascade Yarns’ ReFine yarn will make 10 inches of a 40-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
