Fleurs de Lis for Paris KAL is one of my “3 Rs” Victorian designs: Researched, Rewritten, Reworked.

This reworked pattern is offered now as a KAL KnitALong as a show of support for all those in Paris in mid-November 2015 who have suffered the loss of loved ones, injury, fear, and stress. If you knit it, I hope you also think of them…and, indeed, of all people world wide who suffer from senseless violence.

You may find the original design online, complete with all the errors I discovered! I added the link to the original to the Ravelry database as “Beautiful Counterpane,” as well as identifying errors I found and giving the corrections I personally used.

The pattern may be worked as a counterpane, as originally intended--the small cotton squares which each have 4 fleurs de lis around a centre cross, and they are joined with strips of a simple reversible lace insertion. The pieces are all sewn together.

I am knitting the KAL with Aunt Lydia’s Bamboo Crochet Thread, size 10, with 2mm needles. Each square will be approximately 6 inches X 6 inches. The insertion strips will be approximately 2 inches wide.

I knit one square using worsted weight cotton, added a strip of insertion on just one side, and have used it for over 6 years as a tea towel. Knit in this weight, the square is about 15” X 15” and the insertion is about 4” wide. The design worked in worsted weight yarn would be a lovely afghan, and much quicker to complete than a cotton counterpane!
