This hat is a combination of garter stitch and stockinette. The garter stitch may be machine or hand knitted. A soft #5 yarn is used for this hat and knitting must be done on a bulky machine. The machine needs no bells and whistles. A hobby machine will work fine. One size fits big girls and ladies. A 3.5 oz. skein is ample to complete the hat. The garter stitch gauge is 3 stitches/5.14 rows/inch. The stockinette gauge is 3.5 stitches/4.7 rows/inch. This is a great project to knit partly by hand and partly by machine because garter stitch is so very easy by hand.
