Flippable
This pattern is for any weight yarn! A buttoning cowl, in a squishy reversible stitch pattern which plays very nicely with variegated yarns, and makes striping look like stranded colorwork!
Flippable is perfect for an adventurous beginner knitter, wanting to make something that may look harder than it really is, since it’s actually no more difficult than 1x1 ribbing, and maybe learn a couple of new things. The trickiest part of this pattern is the one-row buttonhole (it isn’t really that hard, but may be a step above beginner level), which you can skip if you’d like, and close the cowl with a shawl pin or brooch instead.
Although the samples are all fitted sizes, this piece can be made any size you like - your cast-on number determines the length (or circumference, around your neck), so cast on as many as you want, going much longer for a big, loopy cowl instead of a fitted style.
Flippable can be made in any weight yarn, and the fabric will be about the thickness of two pieces of stockinette stitch fabric (in that yarn) held together, or squishy 1x1 ribbed fabric unstretched, making for a warm winter accessory. Because it’s identical on both sides, you can wear the piece tons of different ways, folding it, twisting it, flipping it, however you like it best.
The pattern pdf includes detailed instructions and notes on all aspects, to be as beginner-friendly as possible, and explains how to get all the different striping/colorwork designs shown in the sample pieces.
Size: Small(medium, large) = 16 inches / 40cm(17 inches / 43cm, 18 inches / 46cm) wide, and height can range 7 3/4 inches / 19cm to 9 inches / 23cm.
Yarn/needles/gauge: any yarn, any needles, any gauge - you may want to work at a looser gauge than normal because of the thick stitch pattern, for a more flexible fabric.
Skills needed: you really don’t need to know anything more than cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off - the pattern explains slip-stitches, cable cast-on, striping, and some very basic math.
