I haven’t done a silly hat in a while, so here’s a silly hat! The name might be going too far. I’m not sure I can explain why it seems flippy to me. I am very, very sleep-deprived at this point.

These cute pixie hats are deceptively simple to make; the chevron patterning shows off scraps and self-striping yarns. The knitting is easy, with some challenges in the form of centered decreases and work in the round. (I find it a little rough to knit at this gauge in fine yarn on a strict deadline, so please pace yourself even if you find the shaping compelling!)

The pattern currently has 2 sizes to fit kids and adults; I’m working on a third size. (Early adopters get pattern updates, so if it’s successful and worth adding, you’ll get that version of the pattern too.)

Materials:

• 220-250 yards soft sock yarn (self-striping or scraps are ideal)
• 1 16” circular needle in US2-3/2.75-3.25mm, or size needed for gauge.
• 1 set of 5 DPNs in size needed for gauge
• Tapestry needle
• 4 removable stitch markers

Stitch markers are placed both directly on stitches and on the circular needle, so making sure they’re the kind you can clip on and off is—probably important.

Measurements:
This pixie hat can be knit in S(L) and measures about 8.3(9.25)“/21(23)cm across the widest point, 16(18)”/41(45)cm deep from lowest earflap to peak (measured even), and 11(13)“/28(33)cm from midpoint to peak.

Gauge:
Gauge is 26 sts and 40 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked in the round and blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge. (The design causes considerable draw-in, if you read the pattern and think that seems like a pretty huge cast-on for a hat.)
