You need to know how to join a new skein of yarn, and as the work grows wider, stitch markers might be helpful for when you return to the work. I found it useful to complete a repeat, if I was intending to stop in the middle of a row.
I used a 3mm hook, UK size 11, US closest size is D/3.
8 X 100g Draylon yarn. 330 metres/381 yards. There is no weight specified on the label.
You will need a tapestry needle (Bodkin) to sew in any loose ends once you have finished.
There are a lot of rows in this pattern, but you will see repetition. The reason for the large number of rows is to maintain the movement of the piece with new feathers appearing on one side of the work, and, disappearing off the other. Each row starts and ends differently. As you work through the pattern, you are likely to be able to predict the counts and repeats. The deviance from this is the last feathers row when we must make sure that there is a good enough base both ends to place the half scallops at each end on the very last row.
After the last addition of new feathers you will come across a couple of rows added just to elongate the feathers at the edge of the shawl. The temptation may be to think this is a mistake, and that we should be adding more feathers. DON’T!! This is not a mistake, and the addition of more feathers now will add far too many ruffles and seriously damage the aesthetic of the shawl.
