This stitch instruction presents a method for adapting the knitted star stitch for use in colourwork patterns. There are many tutorials around about how to do the star stich and how to adapt it for two colours, but none that I could find where the main colour continued a flat stockinette fabric in the background. This does produce a one sided fabric due to the floats, but you could use short pieces of yarn for each star and weave in all the ends, depending on your preference and patience.
