Flocke
This pattern will be available as an individual download and as part of the upcoming Snowed In hats & cowls collection.
Flocke is a great project for practicing your stranded knitting skills, with small distances for carrying floats and a relatively simple pattern. As is traditional with Fair Isle knitting, only two colours are ever used in each round.
You can knit it as either a toque or a slouchy hat. (It’s the slouchy version in the photos.) Instructions are given in the pattern for both fits. The size, although there is technically only one, is pretty versatile. For a larger hat, knit the slouchy version. For a “manly” version, knit the toque. For a smaller head, knit the toque version, starting with a size or two smaller needles, then switching to the US 7’s after the ribbing. The stretchy ribbed brim will fit a head circumference between about 18” and 24”.
Colours needed:
2 background colours in medium-to-dark shades (mine are both turquoises)
2 foreground colours in light shades (mine are orange and white)
1 bright “pop” of colour for the background in the centre line (mine is pink)
The entire hat weighs 77 grams, so uses less than one skein of Cascade 220 worsted 100% wool.
Most of that weight is the main background colour, bright turquoise.
You can use small-ish scraps for the other colours, about 10 grams each, and you’ll need just 5 metres or so for the pop of colour (pink).
The pattern includes a greyscale chart so you can see what happens when mixing and matching shades. It also includes a simple foreground/background chart and a colour chart showing the colours in the sample.
If you print it out in black & white, it will help if you use pencil crayons to colour in your charts according to your own colour choices.
