Flombre - a portmanteau of Flowers + Ombre - is a matching set of floral stranded colourwork accessories designed to celebrate the range of lights and darks present in petals and sunlight, and to maximise the ombre effects potential of gradient yarns.

SIZES + CONSTRUCTION NOTES

COWL
SIZE

18cm/7” wide (width when laid flat) and 62cm/24.5” circumference around neck.

The Flombre Cowl begins with a provisional cast on worked in waste yarn. From this, a colourwork tube is worked. Once the stranded colourwork portion of the cowl is complete, the provisional cast on is unzipped, and the ends are grafted together. This produces the illusion that the Cowl is seamless and continuous.

HAT
SIZE

23cm/9” from headband to crown,
60cm/23.5” around brim.

The Flombre Hat begins with a marled head-band, after which the main stranded colourwork portion is worked. It decreases to a five-pointed crown which echoes the five petals of the cherry blossom motif used throughout the set. Block over a plate for a tam shape or over a balloon or other round form for more of a beanie style.

MITTENS
SIZE

27cm/10.5” tall, 20cm/8” around hand.

Flombre Mittens begin with a marled cuff, after which the hand is worked. A marled thumb gusset is worked at the same time as the rest of the hand. After the hand has been finished, stitches are picked up around the hand and gusset to work a marled thumb.

The patterns for knitting all the items in the Flombre Accessory Set come with a wealth of enabling creative resources, including:

  • An inspiring essay comparing two totally different approaches to sequencing yarn shades for knitting the same motif (and getting totally different outcomes).
  • Helpful notes on exploring values (light/dark) and temperature (hot/cold) when creating gradient sequences.
  • Handy gradient-planners to help you create your own gradients for all the designs in the set.
  • Colour, black and white and colour-your-own charts to suit a variety of approaches.

Flombre is published with inspiring notes and printable worksheets to colour-in as an aid to deciding which yarn shades to use. The creative process behind the design is offered alongside the pattern instructions to enable and encourage you to adapt this design for creating your own ombre or gradient sequences. If you like the idea of exploring how yarn shades of different values and temperature interact together, Flombre offers a really inviting and accessible starting point.

This is the third of four designs published in the forthcoming eBook KNITSONIK & Friends: Colour to Knit. First published on July 1st in the KNITSONIK & Friends Colour to Knit Club this project will be available for purchase to non club-members from August 2022.
