Floodwater Rising
March is a season of flooding. Between the melting accumulated snow pack of winter, and the blustery spring rain on still-frozen ground, the water levels of creeks and streams and rivers rise. Above the Riverside Park waterfall, the trail through the woods is cut off and ducks paddle where people walked just days before. Below the waterfall, turbulent water foams and froths over the weirs that protect houses downstream from the annual floods.
Floodwater Rising is a crescent shaped shawl worked in two colours of heavy weight yarn. Inspired by the water falling over dams and weirs, the shawl features ribbons of cabled bubbles racing down the width of the shawl to break and foam into a border of rippling lace.
Materials Needed:
- 5mm (US 8) needles or size needed for a pleasing fabric
- @420 yards of dk or light worsted weight yarn in your Main Colour
- @210 yards of dk or light worsted weight yarn in you Contrast Colour
- an additional @15 yards in either colour for the bottom edge
- Cable needle
- Darning needle to weave in ends
Optional Materials:
- Stitch markers to mark off the cables in the body (20)
- Stitch markers to mark lace repeats in the border (28)
Gauge: 21 sts x 34 rows = 4”
The gauge given is measured over the garter ribbing before blocking. Note that I do not consider gauge to be important for a shawl, as an exact fit is not required. Instead, achieve a fabric that pleases you, noting that if your gauge is larger than suggested, you will likely use more yarn.
