The idea for this Florence came after I designed its sibling pattern, the Florrie beret. I love a beret, but as much fun as it is, it’s not always as wearable or as practical as a beanie, so I wanted to do another version that still had all the fun of the original, but a little more sensible!

Just as with the beret, I wanted to try to capture a little of the magic of Spring, but this time contain it into a hat that you could throw on to protect against the cool Spring mornings and evenings. Wether you’re heading off to the woods to walk amounts the snowdrops, or navigating the city streets to the sound of early bird song, this beanie has you covered!

As with the beret, this hat is knit top down, a new-to-me construction for a beanie, but I have to say I’m hooked! It’s perfect for making sure you get the perfect length and there are instructions included in the pattern to let you know the ideal point to add length to your beanie if you wish. The chart was completely reworked to create that classic beanie shape, but with as close to the original beret crown as possible.

You begin with only 3 stitches that are gradually increased to shape the crown. The crown of twisted and slipped stitches is created by following either the chart or chart written instructions.
Just like the buds on the trees, the pattern blooms with every round, and before you know it, a delicate flower has opened up, framed with tiny bobbles like gentle drops of morning dew (and because if you know me at all, I can’t resist a bobble!).

The pattern continues with stockinette stitch worked to the correct length, and then finished with a 1x1 twisted rib brim to keep your hat snug and cosy. The sample shows a single brim, but a folded brim could be worked if you wish, and there are instructions in the pattern to let you know how to do this. Just be aware that altering the length of your beanie or choosing a folded brim will increase the amount of yarn you use, so make sure you have enough if that is your plan!

Needle in size required to obtain gauge. I suggest using 3.75 mm/5 US with a 16” / 40.5 cm cable for the body and double-pointed needles for the crown.
