Flounce Wrap
A lightweight garter stitch wrap for all seasons. It was designed to encircle your neck elegantly when wrapped fully around it, and to ruffle out with flourish when draped like a scarf. Still, when I cast off and held it in my hands, I was surprised by how many different looks could be achieved with this one little garment. You can drape it, fold it, and rearrange the points in all sorts of ways I didn’t anticipate.
A bonus: this is really the ultimate travel knitting! It’s lightweight, mostly mindless garter stitch, with stitch marker reminders at the increase points. In other words, you don’t have to look down at it too much. However, it’s an interesting enough striping pattern that there is always something to look forward to. If you’re newer to knitting, it could even make a great first wrap/shawl pattern.
Skills: cast on and off, knit stitch, M1 increase.
Yarn: Two colors sock-weight yarn. Shown in (MC): Tilli Thomas Sock, color “Desert Aloe” one skein, (440 yards/402 meters, 100 grams/3.53 ounces). You’ll want at least this much yardage/weight, more if you’d like a longer, shawl-like garment. (CC): Isager Alpaca Merino 2, color “8” one skein, (270 yards/247 meters, 50 grams/1.76 ounces). You can easily use yarn leftovers for the CC, as you’ll only need a small amount, about 75 yds/68m for the length shown here.
Gauge in garter stitch: 4 sts/in (16 sts/4 in, 16 sts/10cm). This can be varied up or down a little bit and you’ll still get a great and useful garment.
Needles: 24 in. circular needle in size needed for gauge. I used a US size 7/ 4.5mm.
Sizes: One size. Mine is 60in/152cm along the top edge. This measurement includes both the cast-on edge (40 in/101 cm) and the angled increase “wings” (10 in/25cm on each side). It ruffles out from there, (about 128 in/325cm at the cast off edge!), and is 6in/15cm deep. See “customize” section for several ways to alter the size.
Accessibility Notes: This pattern includes an additional Low Vision- accessible PDF file that is both large print & in a screen reader compatible format. No columns, no pre-formatted “footers”, minimal abbreviations. Includes: image captions, bold headings, a 24 point serif font, (18 point font for page numbers & copyright).
This is a test format and your feedback on it is incredibly valuable. Please visit the discussion in my Ravelry group to let me know how I can improve it. I hope to include this format in more of my patterns in the future, once I learn more about how to best provide this option. I chose this pattern for the first because the instructions are simple & straightforward (leaving me less of an opportunity to make mistakes as I learn, hopefully).
