This pattern started with the yarn. I found a skeinlette bundle at Knitters’ Day Out and immediately pictured a shawl. The mental picture eventually became this shawl.

Fly Free is a crescent shaped shawl worked from the top down. It starts with stockinette or garter stitch, then transitions to lace. The lace pattern is repeatable to the size desired.

Final size will depend on individual gauge, the number of stockinette/garter rows worked, and the number of lace repeats. The border can be worked immediately after the stockinette section if desired.

Gauge & Needles
Gauge is not important, use needle sizes that will get you the fabric you like. The shawl is worked to the desired size.
Three different needle sizes are used - the shawl starts with the smallest size, changes to the middle size for the lace, then to the largest size for the border. The shawl can be worked with one size of needle if desired.

Yarn
Fingering or lace
A gram scale is recommended for maximum yarn usage. Note - if you change needle size for the border, you will need about twice the yarn used in the last repeat of the lace pattern.
