Inspired by the sweeping lines of insect wings, this garter stitch shawl uses the simplest of short row techniques – wrap and turn short rows – to create an unusual shape and sleek, bold design lines.

The wraps of the short rows disappear into the garter stitch fabric, accentuating the contrast stripes. It’s a perfect project to explore bold color choices, or enjoy the interplay of three shades within the same color family.

It’s just the right size to be cozy without being overly bulky, and works up fast on size 8 / 5.0 mm needles.

Each wedge of the shawl is worked following the same formula, so once you’ve knit the first section, it’s nothing but clear skies ahead.

Needles: U.S. size 8 / 5.0 mm, 80 cm long, or any size yielding gauge.

Gauge: 14 sts and 30 rows / 16 garter ridges = 4 inches / 10 cm in garter stitch.

Notions: 7 stitch markers (locking type preferred), yarn needle.
