The cozy Flyway Cowl is named for flight paths used by large numbers of migrating birds; the design was inspired by the epic journeys birds undertake together during each migration season. Its all-over stranded colorwork design features a decorative border that sets off a repeated motif of ducks in flight. The cowl begins with a provisional cast on, is knit in the round to form a tube, and the ends are grafted together using Kitchener stitch. This pattern is recommended for knitters who have experience with stranded knitting, reading charts, and knitting in the round.

The sample was knit with Neighborhood Fiber Co’s Rustic Fingering (475 yards, 4oz skein, 100% organic Merino) in colorways Upton, Rosemont, and Cedarcroft.

Materials
• Approximately 420 yards or 105g of fingering weight yarn in Main Color (background, Upton colorway)
• Approximately 320 yards or 80g of fingering weight yarn in Contrast Color (ducks, Rosemont colorway)
• Approximately 36 yards or 9g of fingering weight yarn in Border Color (border, Cedarcroft colorway)
• US size 2 (2.75mm) 16” circular needle or size required to get gauge
• Optional crochet hook for provisional cast on
• A second US size 2 circular needle for Kitchener stitch, 16” or longer
• Scrap yarn for provisional cast on
• Optional stitch marker
• Darning needle

Size and Finished Measurements
One size, but easily customized by increasing the number of Chart B repeats. (Please note that adding repeats will also increase yarn requirements.)

After blocking, the completed cowl as written is approximately 30 inches (76cm) in length before the ends are grafted together to form a loop. The circumference of the knitted tube that forms the body of the cowl is approximately 14.5 inches (37cm); when flattened, it is 7.25 inches (18cm) across.

Gauge
37 stitches and 38 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in stranded pattern, knit in the round, and blocked.
Adjusting gauge will alter the size of your cowl as well as yarn requirements.
