Folk Horror Socks
Inspired by Ari Astor’s wonderful movie Midsommar, the Folk Horror Socks feature a pattern of seeds and wheat partially obscured by a “bloody” design dripping down from the cuff. It’s a striking design in the original blood red, but also quite an interesting abstract effect in other colours.
The pattern is written for three colours (main, dripping cuff, folk motif), though more or less could be used as you see fit— add in an additional colour for a contrasting heel/toe, or perhaps work the folk motif in alternating colours. The sample socks used about half of 100g skein for the main colour, an entire 20g mini skein for the red, and about half of a 10g mini skein for the green.
The colourchart as shown on the sample socks has been optimised to decrease the length of floats as much as possible. It is included in a red and green version to reflect the colours of the sample socks but as these are colours many people have difficulty with, a colourblind- or printer-friendly chart has been included.
A printer friendly version is also included as the last two pages of the digital download— all instructions on one page, with a full page sized version of the main colourchart optimised to be printed in black and white.
This is the ‘sister’ pattern to Candlewax Socks, which have the same drip pattern coming from the cuff, but also feature corrugated ribbing at the top of the cuff and a band heel instead of a standard heel flap heel. The Candle Wax Socks use only two colours, and as such I would consider them an easier pattern for those intimidated by colourwork. These patterns can be purchased separately, but also together for a combined price of $5.50 (plus applicable taxes according to jurisdiction).
