The Folkvang Mittens are knit in the shape of classical Norwegian mittens, but with an afterthought thumb and silk-merino lined cuffs. Beginning with a provisional cast on, the cuff lining and then outside is knit. The cuff is closed, and the rest of the mitten is worked in stranded knitting.

The color pattern is syncopated by strategic purl stitches, a nod to Bohus knitting, but symmetric and much simplified compared to traditional Bohus patterns.

A suitable project for intermediate to advanced knitters.

If making yarn substitutions, go for a Shetland-type yarn as a substitute for Fenris, and a soft light fingering or lace as a substitute for Bestla.

Stockinette in Bestla, knit on a 2.25 mm (US 1) needle: 27 sts x 13 rounds = 10 x 2.5 cm (4 x 1 inches).
Corrugated rib in Fenris, knit on a 2.25 mm needle: 26 sts x 10 rounds = 10 x 2.5 cm (4 x 1 inches).
Colorwork in Fenris, knit on a 2.5 mm (US 11⁄2)needle: 26 sts x 32 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).

The name Folkvang comes from Norse mythology, and is the name of the fertility goddess Freya’s home. She took half of the dead to her place, letting Odin take the other half. Odin let his dead fight and party in perpetuity, who knows what Freya did with hers?

Folkvang-vanterne er formgivet i klassiske norske vanters forbillede, men med forede kanter ved håndled. Først laves en midlertidig opslagning, og kantens for og yderside strikkes. Efter at kanten er strikket sammen, strikkes resten af vanten i farvestrik.

Strategisk placerede vrangmasker giver liv til mønsteret, og sender en kærlig hilsen til svenskernes Bohus-strikketradition. Folkvang er bare symmetrisk, og meget simplere end de traditionelle Bohus- mønstre.

Navnet Folkvang kommer fra nordisk mytologi, og er navnet på frugtbarheds- gudinden Frejas hjem. Hun tog halvdelen af de døde, og lod Odin tage den anden halvdel. Odin lod sine døde slås og feste i al evighed, hvad mon Freja gjorde med sine?
