Fontaine
The great Joan Fontaine is a British American Actress. She is best know for earning an Academy Award in 1942 for Best Actress for Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion (1941), the only actress Academy Award ever won in a film directed by Hitchcock! She is one of the last surviving leading ladies from the 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood.
This hat is inspired by a cabled sweater I once saw Joan Wearing. Knit from the top down with cabled increases and small eyelets along the side of each cable. The hat is also a great way to use up all those scraps you have lying around your house! All you need is about 4oz of worsted weight yarn!
Materials Needed:
Yarn: Approximately 220 yards (3oz/100g0 of Worsted Weight Yarn in colors of your choice. I used scraps of WATERshed by Harrisville Designs in Barn Door, Bancroft, Mallard, Spoonwood, Penstock and Granite.
Needles: One set (5) US 6 (4.0 mm) Double Pointed Needles and One set US 6 (4.0 mm) 16” circular needles.
Notions: Tapestry Needle, Scissors, Safety Pins or scrap yarn.
Gauge: 20 sts and 36 rnds = 4” in Stockinette Stitch. If your gauge is not that given here, try a smaller or larger needle until you obtain this gauge. If you have to use a different size needle from that called for, it will not in any way alter the garment provided you knit 6 stitches to the inch.
Measurements:
Head Circumference: 24 in.
Length (from crown to brim): 10 in.
Pattern Notes:
This hat is a great stash buster for those little balls of yarn you have left over from other projects. I collected yarns that were close in color and wound them on a ball winder. This creates what I like to call, a ‘Scrap Ball’ effect. Wind the yarn into a cake of yarn until it weighs approximately 3oz. Because this hat is knit from the top down, when you run out of yarn, you’re done!
