Sometimes I just have to cover something in knitting.
Lately it seems like everyone carries a water bottle. I do. In an off moment, I gazed upon mine and thought, “This needs to be covered in knitted lace”.
There’s no good reason for this. The bottles are insulated. They come in a myriad of colors. But there’s something fun about having my very own unique cover on my water bottle.
This piece is worked from the top down with an elastic band knitted into the piece (so it doesn’t slip). The lace pattern (found in Barbara Walker’s A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns) works best when it tightly encircles a water bottle, so it may seem a bit small until it is pulled on.
Techniques used: temporary cast on, a tweak of the three-needle bind off, sewing with a needle and thread, mattress stitch, working in the round, and lace knitting.
Since water bottles vary in size, individual gauges vary, and other lace patterns work equally well, this pattern includes instructions to adapt this cover. You can use the pictured lacy knit stitch or substitute your own. Print out the worksheet and do a bit of math to convert the pattern to fit any water bottle using your preferred knit stitch pattern.
