The Forestier sweater is probably the most classic, classy sweater that I have worked in a long time. It’s one of those pullovers that never go out of style, it’s just lovely to have it available in the wardrobe for so many occasions.
Design and construction
This classic sweater features a large, centred cable-pattern over the front (including 3 different cables) and an overall double moss-st pattern for the sides of the front, the back and the sleeves.
There is no waist-shaping.
The body: is worked bottom-up and in-the-round. You start working the lower body from the ribbed hem, which is worked to match the patterning.
Thereafter work is set-up for the cable-patterns on the front, double moss-st pattern on the sides and back.
At underarms work is divided and upper front and upper back are worked in separate pieces. The shoulders are seamed together from WS. The sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round from picked-up sts along the armhole openings. The sleeves are shaped with regular decreases and worked to desired length and finished with a ribbed cuff. The neck edging is worked in one piece from picked-up and knit sts.
Sizes
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Finished chest measurements, after washing/blocking and worked at gauge: 78/83/88/92/97/101/105/110/114/119/124/130/134 cm = 30/33/35/36.5/38/40/41.5/43/45/47/49/51/53”. The sample is worked in 78 cm/30”, with no ease.
Materials
Yarn: I recommend a sport weight yarn with great stitch-definition that knits up to gauge. I used “Aubrey Sport” from Martins Lab, in the colourway “Lappato”, to work the pullover. This sport weight yarn comes in skeins of 100 gr/3.75 oz, and 300 m/328 yards. Of this specific yarn you will need approximately 1000/1050/1100/1150/1210/1270/1330/1400/1475/1550/1625/
1700/1780 meters = 1090/1145/1200/1255/1320/1385/1450/1525/1610/1690/1855/
1940 yards.
Needles Size 3 mm/US2.5, or needle size to obtain gauge.
Notions: 8 – 10 removable stitch-markers. A cable-needle (cn). Waste yarn or separate holder (s). Tapestry needle. Blocking tools. A row-counter is useful.
Gauge
26 – 27 sts = 10 cm/4”, worked in double moss-st pattern.

-All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches.
Knitting skills
Intermediate.
The cables may look intricate, but in fact they are quite simple and easy to memorize.
- Cast-on. Bind-off. Decreases. Shoulders are seamed.
Picking up sts around armhole openings and neckline.
Creating sleeve-cap by short-rows.
- Cables are worked from charts and/or written instructions.
