Forestier
Forestier is my latest design for the childrens wardrobe.
I found inspiration during my autumnal forest walks; I was gathering pine cones and dry leaves to bring home and wanted to put some of the shapes and structures into the patterning of this sweater.
Construction
The lower body of the sweater is worked bottom-up and in-the-round. At underarms work is divided and upper back and front are worked flat in separate pieces.
Shoulders are seamed together from WS.
The sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round from picked-up sts around the armhole openings.
The neckband is worked in-the-round from picked-up sts along the neckline.
Apart from the shoulder-seams the construction is seamless.
Sizes
Finished chest measurements, after washing/blocking and worked at gauge: Size 1: 2 – 3 years: 55 cm/22” / Size 2: 4 – 6 years: 61 cm / Size 3: 6 – 8 years: 65 cm/26”
Size 4: 8 – 10 years: 71 cm/28” / Size 5: 10 – 12 years: 79 cm/31”
The sample is worked in size 2 - 3 years.
Materials
Yarn: I recommend a DK weight yarn with great stitch-definition that knits up to gauge. I used “Tibetan DK” from Martins Lab, in the colourway “812- Granite Melange”, to work the pullover. This DK weight yarn comes in skeins of 50 gr/1.76 oz, and 212 m/232 yards.
Of this specific yarn you will need approximately 400/460/550/650/750 m = 440/505/600/710/820 yards. Needles: Size 3 mm/US2.5 for the ribbed cuff/hems/neckband.
Size 3.5 mm/US4 for the main body and sleeves.
Notions 6 - 8 removable stitch-markers. A cable-needle (cn). Separate holder. Tapestry needle. Blocking tools. A row-counter is useful.
Gauge
26 - 27 sts in double moss-st pattern = 10 cm/4”.
The pattern
The cable-patterns are charted, as well as written out.
The double-moss st pattern is written out.
There is a schematic.
Measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches.
Knitting skills: intermediate.
Knitting techniques: cast-on / bind-off / picking up sts /
working cables following charts and/or written instructions.
