This pattern, written for the Bond ISM/USM knitting machine, is ideal for learning some skills on the knitting machine on a small scale. It contains decreases, ribbing, cables, and grafted shoulder seams. The cable is charted (and optional!). There are lots of notes to help beginners. Sized for 9-12 months, finished garment is 52cm round chest and 32 cm from back neck to waist. Easy to give away if you have no baby yourself!

This vest is inspired by a pattern I saw on Ravelry, the Owl Baby Vest by Jodi Haraldson. That pattern has a smaller gauge and is knit in the round on hand needles, has no cable chart, and has five owls. But it’s super cute! So if you feel like knitting this by hand, that’s where to go!
