Fourth Grade
Nothing babyish for fourth graders, this hat features chic stripes that are easily woven through the knitting.
Materials:
4 colors of worsted weight wool. In the example, I used Cascade 220, Knit Picks Swish and Valley Yarns Superwash. You’ll need about 130 yards of main color and fewer than 30 yards each of the embellishing colors.
16” circular needles, size US 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (I am a loose knitter so in the example, I used size US 6) and additional needles for small-diameter knitting (DPNs, a second circular or a long Magic Loop needle). For a tighter fit around the head, knit the brim in one size smaller needles and then go up a size for the body of the hat.
Gauge:
5 stitches/inch in stockinette stitch in the round.
Measurements:
Child-sized: 7.5” from brim to top when measured flat. See guidelines in pattern for sizing up or down.
